Might check your thermostat. If your thermo is opening up on initial startup and then staying open, there's your problem. Also how cold is it? I know back in Alaska, I had to put cardboard in front of my radiator to keep my heater hot. As far as management, Im a Sgt in the Army. Thats where I get it from and the guys I got on my shift aint the sharpest tools in the shed.lol. Thanks though.

Default '99 Durango with the same problem

Apparently, I have the same problem as the original commenter. Just got quoted $3,000 today to fix it.

I'm afraid I don't know jack about cars beyond changing my own oil. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I should deal with this? Cough it up to the dealer or go elsewhere? Seriously doubt I could do this myself.

Found this forum via Google. Hope you all don't mind a novice posting.

Thanks.

Sorry to hear that you have the problem.

Honestly, the first thing you need to decide is whether you want to keep the truck. If you don't, then two options: fix it as cheaply as you can and try to get some value out of it when you sell it, or just sell it as is and take a hit. You are going to take a hit regardless. If you want to keep it, then go to the aftermarket and get some HD replacement heads. If you have a lot of miles on the engine with low compression, then you may want to go for a replacement short block + HD heads. There are several paths you can take. I would stay away from the dealer on this one, and try to find a good mom/pop place with experience doing heavy line work. Tell them you will supply the heads/block and pay them to do the install. If they balk, then find someone else.

Thank you. That's very helpful. I want to keep it - it's just a regular 1999 Durango SLT 4x4, never did any aftermarket stuff to it - but I've had her for a decade and hate the prospect of giving her up. It would be like shooting my own dog...only less sad.

Thanks again.
