Default Truck dies in the hole.

In my 2001 i've been having a problem that if i split a waterhole wide open the truck will die in it's spot. This is a problem since I like to go mudding alot and it's a work truck. What is causing this? Is there a sensor that shuts it off? Because I know people with dodges that this has happened too before.
