Yeah, the way its set up, is Cali emissions require you have all three.

The first two are "pre-cats", and then the actual cat is the third unit. Usually (if I'm not mistaken) you have one pre-cat after each manifold, and then they both go into the main cat, before going to the muffler.

If they do inspections, and just one of your three pieces are missing, I'm sure they'll fail you. If you move from Cali, you could probably cut off both pre-cats and just have the regular cat, and they'd pass you. Cali is the only place in the U.S., if I'm not mistaken, with that strict of emissions.

Man I'd hate to live in a place like that.
We never have any inspections or anything.

Have you ever seen a catalytic converter dissected? The guy who did the exhaust (custom cat-back) for my Dakota many years ago did. He had a catalytic converter from a late model GMC 1500 mounted to the wall in the main office, with one side of its exterior wall cut away to see the insides.

And the Chrysler people told us that "its like holding up a toothpick to the exhaust". Yeah, right.

I bet its not as much as most people claim, but they do rob us of some power.

At the rate they break down, it really is just like holding a toothpick to the exhaust pipe.

The loss of power is not noticeable to the butt dyno, and certainly is not present in day to day driving.

dgaf dgaf.

yes they are 2 full bricks of honeycomb passages, each passage is about 1mm wide x 1mm tall.

the cat does help provide some back pressure though i noticed a big difference in low end when i was messing with that
