Tell me it is not my Tranny
The viper from PATC is about $2400 and it is built with several upgrades. Does anyone have experience with their trannies?
I have read a lot of bad things about the stock 46RE, so I don't think I want to go that route. I was going to add the heavy duty cooler and eliminate it going through the radiator.

So... It sound like it's bad. Plug in a scanner and check to see if there is any codes for tranny related issues and then what I would do is flush as much of that super expensive fluid out and try a " newer " ( junk yard maybe or new) torque converter. Give it a shot if it's still bad after 40 miles rebuild the tranny but this time you don't need to buy a torque converter.
I just re-built my trans within the past 2 months. It was quite a learning experience. I ended up taking the tranny out and putting it back 3 different times. Mind you, I was in-experienced. Well, I put a Transgo TFOD-JR kit in it and it shifts a little harder, but not much. If you do decide to rebuild it yourself, be careful and take your time. I know other people, including MonteC (he's a trans tech), suggest putting in a Sonnex sure cure kit. I don't know where you could get it or what it is but they rant and rave about it.
Well, it is dead now. As soon as I put the truck in drive or reverse the engine stalls.
I tried to rebuild the tranny in my Jeep and ended up having a spacer fall out during assembly of the overdrive unit. I did not know it fell loose and once I got it installed back in the Jeep it shredded everything.
I think it will be easier to just buy one from PATC this time.

Seeing that it's a 99 you have. I would go to a local tranny shop and see what they can do for you (go to a couple different ones). Get the Sonnex kit yourself and see if the local shop will install it while rebuilding your trans.
I do not know anyone local I trust. I brought the Jeep to one place and they estimated the cost at least $2K to rebuild with no upgrades. Then when I attempted it myself and it failed I took the Jeep to another shop that was highly recommended. They rebuilt it stock and charged me $2500.00. It has a very small leak, and they did not reconnect the transfer case linkage correctly. It is just going to be less painful to buy one built and have it shipped to me. I would love to attempt the rebuild myself again, but I just cannot take the risk right now.
Then go to the shop you don't think you trust.
That's why I said go to a couple different ones. It's a 99. 2500 + shipping + if theres a prob, you get to pay shipping again instead of going down the road to the shop.

i just bought my truck with a new tranny.. it did the same stuff as yours.. took it back up to where i got it said i got issues with the tranny.. they pulled it apart and put a brand new chrysler tranny in. they also explained to me the 2nd gen rams have a check valve that goes into the radiator. this basically can clog at any time.. whether being new its at 5 miles or 145,000 in your case.. long story short when this check valve clogs it bascially over heats and begins to wear ur tranny down rather quickly. if you take the check valve off and put in a $3 peice of fuel line with 2 worm clamps. your good to go and the fluid can always circulate, well worth the $3 and greatly helps out the new tranny.. on the other hand yes.. i think you need a new tranny..
good advice, except I would splurge for the $12 a foot Trans fluid line that can withstand the +100 psi pressure from the trans. Ask VWandDodge for a real world experience story.
hm. well since the place i bought it from was nice of enough to explain to me how the whole deal works, being i was a 4cyl and small truck guy, i could always take the fuel line off and put the trans fluid line on. its working pretty good right now though, maybe they used trans fluid line instead of fuel line, not sure.. but thanks for that tip.
Well I decided not to go the PATC route. When I looked them up on BBB the results where not favorable. I found a local shop and the guy seemed very knowledgeable. They pulled it out and said the torque converter came apart and sent some metal filings into the tranny. They are going to rebuild and have it ready for me on Thursday. At least the truck will be running again. Hopefully it stays without any other issues for a while.
Wanted to thank you ZMAN. I can be a little stuborn at times.
I went to a local shop and was very pleased. I used the BBB website to check there rating first. When I looked up PATC they did not fair well.
The TC let go and sent som metal filings into the tranny. It was completely rebuilt with transgo kit and a cooler for $2,300.00. They also covered towing from my house to them. It took them less then a week turn around.
If anyone is in the Bastrop, TX area L&M Automotive is a good shop to visit.
