Rick and VW/Dodge,

I've never tackled a tranny of anykind (manual or auto). However, I'm a pretty good mechanic and have tacked engine rebuilds, heads, CVs, power steering racks etc... I've got an old Porsche that keeps me fresh on my mechanic skills.

All that being said, one of the biggest reasons I tackled this job was because MonteC said "if I paid attention to detail...I could do it". So off I went.

My dad helped tremendously. Not just with the physical labor, but also with bouncing ideas off and fabricating tools (like the 800lb spring press).

All in all, it wasn't bad. We made a few mistakes along the way, corrected them and got back on track. The key(s) are; 1) don't rush, 2) get/stay organized, 3) get a manual/video (I have both), 4) keep all the parts organized in ziploc bags and boxes.

Hopefully, I will have the tutorial up soon.

BTW...I'm getting a P0171 code (running lean) since my install, and the only thing we messed with concerning the engine was a) spark plugs and b) o2 sensor. Any ideas?

1988 PORSCHE 944 N/A. Wrecked it last week though. All damage is cosmetic to the driver side. Interested in a PORSCHE?????

Nerp. I'd rather have a 1988/89 924.

Porsche haha. I know the feeling. I have had a number of Audi's. The last remaining one is a 1986 5000S Turbo. Which I should sell.

As far as your keys to success 1,2, and 4 no problem. #3, what manual/ video did you use? Usually the Haynes manuals and the like don't cover transmissions.

Can't wait for the tutorial.
If you have a chance please chime in here.

The manual I used was the DODGE shop manual for a 2001. The link is posted in this forum (just look for "merry Christmas").

Even though the manual was a 2001, it still covered the 46RE and walked me through step by step.

The video was a ATSCO video on the 518 tranny. The video showed a complete OD unit teardown and partial info on the barrel and VB. Still worth the $30. I have the video in an .avi format (less than 1 gig), if someone needs it.

Is there somewhere here I can post it?

OKAY EVERYBODY - I FINALLY FINISHED THE PICTURE TUTORIAL FOR THE 46RE REBUILD.

Here is what I did.
1. There is a 17mb .PDF file on the following web site that has all the pics and tips/tricks etc...
2. If you want better pics than what is included in the PDF file, then you will find them on the website as well.
3. I have the 518 video that I will post to the web site soon.

Here is the link...

ENJOY! Remember if any of you DIY'ers have a question about the 46RE, just email me at 'cdgobbell@fedex.com' for a quick response.

Lastly, I would like to thank the folks on this forum for all the help over the past few months. Maybe my 46RE tutorial will help someone else.

Congrats gobell1, I also just completed my rebuild and I tip my hat to you for supplying this forum with the tutorial. I reached 10 pics when camera finally was covered in ATF. You (and montec) are correct, take your time and follow the manual (except for the VB assembly error I found in the 97 dodge ram manual).
