whining in reverse only

Default whining in reverse only

1997 dodge ram 1500 4x4
drives fine in drive but when i go to back up i hear a slight whining sound.
what could that be?

Does it do it all the time, or only when it is cold.

If the latter, that is a known issue and does not hurt anything. If it does it all the time, you might need to investigate more.

does it worse when cold but still a slight whine when the truck has warmed up. like i said before it is very light but noticable.

I'm pretty sure it's just the torque converter.

That, or it could be because your engine is running backwards and sucking in air from the exhaust pipes rather then blowing it out.

I have the same model 1997 4x4, 46re trans. Bought truck new, it started making noise in reverse when cold, took in under warranty but they did not do anything. It was intermittent problem.
I think the TSB was for this problem. The noise in mine has stopped. I have change fluid and filter about once a year and I think using ATF+4 after ATF+2 wasn't available may have helped it.

All the Dodge trucks my family has ever owned have a "groan" or low pitched "whine" when in reverse. Only slightly there when warm, a little louder when cold. Never had any problems. +1 for just a typical Dodge tranny.

Mine does the same thing now. Just replaced tranny a few K ago. Im guess its the Torque Converter.
