Default 5.9 worth rebuilding? 275K

I have a 96 dodge 3/4 360 and the po swaped the motor and tranny combo at 275k do to the 5.9 was using 4qts a week. and then the tranny broke and somthing locked up. and then he swaped in a 96 318 tranny combo from a 1/2 ton. that combo works good. so I bought this truck with the orginal motor and tranny combo and a 96 1/2 ram as a parts truck. I havent pulled the heads off the 360. any body think the motor is worth rebuilding? I do have a 1973 360 and a 1980 360 both sitting in the garage. build a 408 with the 73 360 bottom end and use the heads off the 96 360? this is my plow truck. I also have a 98 ram 3/4 360 with a 52 fastman tbi. the 318 has header. my 98 also have a k&n cold air intake.

Not sure, but I think the '73 360 block/'96 5.9L heads combo will work. Can't remember from what I read if the old block will take a modern hydraulic roller cam (I think it will). But, if you're going to build a 408 out of that combo, I would go with 2.02 heads instead of the stock 1.92s. Sounds like an interesting proposition and cheaper than swinging out a rebuilt short or long block.

The 360 Magnum block with these heads is a good combo...read it in a engine building article.
