I have an 01 1500 and i was wondering if i could put true duals on it...it doesnt look to me like i could fit two cats and ive heard that you can't so i just want to know if its possible or not...also if its not would it be louder to have a ypipe after my cat to two mufflers than have a single in dual out muffler or would it be the same considering its the same kind of mufflers...thanks a lot

well you CAN run true duals, but you would have to run them down the passanger side, because the fuel tank takes up most of the space between the frame and the driveshaft on the driver side. If you are going to run duals (which would be louder) be sure to run an X-pipe or H-pipe, just a balance tube of some sort. If you want to retain the low end torque, i wouldnt go any bigger than 2.25" tubing, you can go bigger, and it will probobly be louder, but you will sacrifice som low end for top end (but these engines dont have a topend, they redline at 5000rpm)

cats are overrated, get rid of them (depending on how much you get inspected of course)

 

Keep a cat. Since yours is a 2001, you should have a y-pipe before the cat, going to a 3" single inlet/3" single outlet converter. Plenty big pipe there. Do a cat-back, or a high flow cat and a cat-back.

If you get rid of the converter, your CEL will be happy to light up for you, nine times (or more) out of ten.

Catalytic converters do help clean the exhaust. Do they suck a little (and I do mean a little, unless you've really, really upgraded your engine) performance out of the engine? Yes. Do they help the environment a little? Yes. I'm not trying to be a tree hugger here, h*ll, I hate what those idiots sitting in their offices in Cali and New York have done to the Black Hills out here in SD, but not running a converter is illegal for a reason.

 

i got 2 1/2 inch true duals with 2 forwmaster 40s. i dont have cats on there and no check engine light, and ive had that set up for about 1 1/2 years. it comes off the stock manifolds and run down the passenger side of the truck. the only thing i dont have is a x or y pipe, but that isnt to nessesary if your motor is stil mostly stock. i love how it sounds and performs though.

 

I have a thread going on this same thing. I am building a custom true dual setup and after looking at everything I am going to duck under the frame rails after the front suspension and run the exhaust down the outside of the frame rails and dump it in front of the rear tires on either side.

I agree with some of the other comments - if you don't run it that way, you would need to bring everything over to the pass. side in order to get around the gas tank.

 

I have a sing out in front of my passenger side retire I love it when I do burn outs it help push the smoke around alot more.

 

Have you ever had a check engine light in those 1.5 years for anything at all? Does it light up for a few seconds when you turn the key to the "ON" position before you start the truck? I bet you its burned out.

 

I find it funny when people say that they never had their CEL light come on and then they find out that the bulb was burned out lol, then 9 times out of 10 they got a crapload of problems they didn't know they had.

 

yep, junked all three of my cats, and now I'm rockin the check engine light. And the truck stinks. If you ditch the cat, buy some advil
