Default transmission... kind of?

heres the truck:
98 ram 1500 4x4
heres the problem: the truck wont shift into any gears. Shifter moves through the gears super easy. I checked the shift linkage under the truck, nothing noticeably wrong. i checked it all the way up to the steering column. I actually had to put the truck in park by pushing on the shift rod, since i was in reverse when it went.So i'm guessing the problem has to be somewhere between the shifter to the shift arm. The Shift arm does not move when i go through the gears. I cant find any real info in the Haynes manual. If anyone could help me out before i'm forced to call AAA would be great. If this isnt something an amateur should tackle that would be nice to know to.

Since you've eliminated everything outside the cab, all that's left is the steering column. According to the FSM, it's not serviceable and was designed to be replaced as a unit.

I replied in this thread with something that I wanted to put in a different thread, so I edited it.
