Default Check engine light comes on (1999 5.9 4x4)

This has happened to me three times now. Twice when idleing during warmup and once while driving down the road at 25 mph. I'll start my diesel up and after approx 5 minutes of warming up, the engine increases in Rpm's (almost a high rev), starts blowing out black smoke from exhaust then dies (approx 5 seconds of mishap). It will start right back up but the check engine light comes on. After a day or two the light shuts off (or resets) and we're back where we started. The one time it threw this fit i was driving around 25 mph and the truck took off like a rabbit (scared the heck out of my wife & me) until I pulled in the clutch then it died. My wife now calls my truck Christine and won't go near it. But it again, started right up with the check engine light on.... I haven't had a chance to take it to a dealer yet to have it pluged in but was wondering if anyone has had the same issue and what they did. I just recently changed the fuel filter (didn't look too bad) and haven't had the issue since but have only drove approx. 50 miles since. Thanks.

Hi, welcome to the forums. I believe that if you reposted this over in the diesel section (or maybe a moderator could take care of that for you by moving this thread), you would get many more answers than here. Mostly gassers here.

Oh, and by the way, Dodge never made a 5.7L diesel. I believe you mean the 5.9L diesel.
