Default 01 fan movement

Hello All,

I have an 01 dodge Ram w/ 5.2. I started hearing a fan belt squeal, when I looked at the belt (while motor running) I noticed that the fan pulley is moving foward and backward (towards the radiator and back) is this normal or is something going? What would it be?

thank you

Hi, and welcome to DF. I suggest you remove the belt and check all the pulley's for play. The one you are talking about is attached to the water water pump and should not move in/out ,up or down.

um, no. the pulley should be solid. some waterpumps are seperate from the pulleys and they use 4 bolts to hold them on and some of them come as a unit, i would dig a little deeper on this one.

i see a new water pump in your future. don't let it go too long, or it'll lay down on you. mine crapped out all at once with no warning, spit the needle bearings out on the ground and locked up. i had to have it towed home.

if you have any other problems, such as high mileage on the timing chain, leaking plenum, or leaking front seal - this is a good time to take care of all of it.

I've got a similar problem only it's with my harmonic balancer. It wobles a little but it's not lose or anything and it's making a lot of fan noise and squeakin. i wanted to replace it but not sure how to go about doin it. The camshaft was turned a few months ago when my motor was rebuilt so it's not warped and all the bearings have been replaced so i think it's just the balancer.
