Default I am new to the forum

I have a 2001 1500 ext cab with 85K miles. 3 days ago my check engine came on. I took it to Autozone and detected code PO442. It said as other forum members have mentioned it is the evap emmision system. I have a Haynes Repair Manual but I am by no means a mechanic. Is this a relatively easy fix and where do you recommend to buy such parts and any idea how much it would cost for the part. Thanks

Check your gas cap ... make sure it's on tight. If that doesn't work, then do search in the 2nd Gen section for P0442.

yeah, it's a pretty straight forward fix. I had the same code pop up on my '97 and it ended up being the charcoal canister which is located on the outer frame rail on the driver side and the purge solenoid. I got both parts from the stealership only because they were'nt available any where else. total cost was 70 bucks and 1 hour to do. bolt on. hope this was of some help and welcome to the forum. Alot of people will chime in with great advice pretty soon.

welcome. learn to check your own codes by turning ignition switch to on-off-on-off-on. and to reset pcm(and cel) by disconnecting neg battery and either turning ignition to start for 30 sec or turning on headlights for 30 sec.

check for loose gas cap. also check for broken vac hose or damage around evap system. it hangs down in a precarious (thats a hard word to type) place on passenger side.
