pinging under heavy acceleration?
i know i know im a 3rd gen guy but you 2ng gen fellas are the "guru's" on the 5.9L while 3rd gens are all about the hemi..
ive got a 2002 ram 5.9L and under heavy acceleration there is a loud noticable pinging from the engine area, at first i thought it was lifters tapping, so i checked the oil (which was a lil overdue for a change) and there turned out to be only 2 1/2 quarts in the motor. so i did a change with full synthetic and a quart of lucas.
i realize i probably need a new plenum gasket due the amount of oil missing. (went through that on my 96 2500 ram)
but the noise just seemed to start today, it only does it at about 3500+ rpms and it dont make any noise at all if im just reving the motor, only when im moving.
i thought the oil change would help but no dice. the wife doesnt think its the lifters but she never believes any thing i say.
any help would be appricated!
thanks

Forget the seafoam. It's your plenum gasket. If you are still under a warranty, don't wait. If you are not, get ready for a day of work or a couple days of pay.

It might very well be both.
A leaking plenum gasket will cause carbon build up on the valves and the loss of vacuum can also cause ping.
Test for a leaking plenum, and stop by the dealership and pick up a can of Mopar Combustion Chamber cleaner. Much better than Seafoam and about the same price.
