Default Fluid type and capacities, please.

I have a 2000 Dodge 1500 4x4 5.9. The bell housing was broken where the starter bolts on. The transmission only has 68k, so I wasn't going to junk it. I found a good case and had my internals swapped over as well the Sonnax Sure Cure kit. Now I know the transmission uses ATF+4, but how many quarts in the trans and how many in the converter?

And along with the transmission, the transfer case was split in two, so what fluid is used in the transfer case and how much? I go a used TC with 123k.

Thanks!!

-Tim

I don't know about the transfer case, but the trans and torque converter combined should take about 10-11 qts. If you are going to be putting the trans in yourself then pre-fill the torque converter before you put it in, then add the rest of the fluid after you put the trans in.

I would add about 6 qts to the trans and then fire it up and slowly add more fluid as you shift it through the gears and the oil pump fills the whole trans with fluid.

I thought the trans took 15 quarts, that might be with the extra cooler. I'd buy more just to be safe and return what you don't use.

Walmart had the supertech ATF+4 for $3.77 last time I was there. Supposedly it meets the certification.

Good ol'Wal-Mart! I don't know about the Supertech Generic brand. You know how funny these Chrysler transmissions are. Thanks.

i also could not bring myself to buy wal-mart brand atf+4. for $1/qt more they have the valvoline brand. i know that its probably all brewed up at the same place at the same time by the same manufacturer, but i still just couldn't do it....

i'll buy their 2 cycle oil and chain oil, but not the engine oil or atf. no good reason, but i just can't do it.

I'm right there with you DH. Every time I do an oil change I get tempted to buy the AutoZone brand stuff, but I just can't bring myself to cutting a corner just to save a couple bucks.

Besides, I've heard that AutoZone filters the re-claimed stuff and puts some of that (or all of that) in there. I don't know how true this is, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit!
