I drive a 2001 RAM 1500 single cab short box with the 5.9 360 V8
Any help would be much appreciated.
thanks in advance.

Also, I'm a college student and don't have a ton of cash to spare but am willing to pay if you really think it's worth it...
Pruple Dodge, Jason, and TMS Bill are giving you great advice. I have a 98 with the 5.9 and I also run a 14x3 K&N not that yours is a bad idea, but to add to their wisdom, I saw the biggest gain in HP, Torque, and MPG's when I got rid of that Crank driven fan blade and installed the Flex-a-Lite dual electric fans with the thermostat control. Man I mean I felt the difference IMMEDIATELY. Now there are threads on this Forum where members have fabbed their own and they work just as well but trust me you will definitely notice the difference right off. And yes Jasom was correct on the Fat Chicks thing they are also bad for your suspension, tread wear, ect.....ok now I'm being rude.

Well I don't like the idea of hurting my tranny... 3.55 is stock, right? I don't have 2grand either. What would you guys suggest? I'm guessing this is on 16" rims, right?
I think www.4wheelparts.com has a tire size to gear ratio chart.

yes, and I appreciate all the advice I'm being given.
There is also some great info on 4wheel. thanks for the link.

I have never considered the fan... how exactly does it make such a big difference?

Oh, and don't worry about being rude... she has packed on a few lately... and I may have mentioned that fat chicks ruin mileage... she's not happy.

well your cank fan pulls energy from the engine's crank when it engages to cool your radiator down. It's driven by the same belt that drives all of your other accessories and it is a significant pull. The electric fan uses electrical power to run not mechanical so when you remove the crank driven fan the energy lost is restored and there's less drag on your motor. The electric fan only comes on when the coolant temp reaches a set temp or you turn on your a/c.

I know this might not sound very profound, but it does make a big difference...

Whenever possible keep your RPMs under 2000. After that it just starts blowing gas out the pipe

Well I didn't mean it litterally starts blowing gas out the pipe.

It just seems that fuel economy starts to go to **** after 2,000 rpms
I get 15 mpg if I travel 70mph on a trip (I drive from Lexington to Pittsburgh on a regular basis the speed limit is 65-70 probably 95% of the trip) and my rpms sit around 1900 (33" tires with 3.55 gears) now at 80mph my rpms sit around 2100 and I get about 13mpg. And around town I only get about 12-13 mpg, and that's taking it easy on the medal. If I'm always punching it down It's more like 10-11mpg.

I guess that makes sense. thanks for the tip. I'll look into the fan next.

Even though I know I should drive like there's an egg between my foot and the peddle... I can't help but mash it every now and then. I do keep it around 2000-1800 when just cruising though.

on another note, look at my new rims! haha not really. just finally got around to polishing my summer rims.
