Default big tires gearing question

hey guys, i thought this might be a good place to get some first hand expirience. if you were running 38s, what gearing would you want in your truck? it will be mostly street driven but will get some rough off road use from time to time. what gearing i run will determine what axles shoud go under my little project truck. i have a pretty much stock 5.2 magnum under the hood. im thinking 4.88s or 5.13s? it had 28s and 3.55s
thx

How are you keeping your Dakota axles together with those tires?

If you're in the flat land you could do 4.88. If you've got any hills or mountains, I'd go with 5.13.

its a truck im building now, so i dont have bigger axles yet. need to know what gearing im going to run first. for example if i went with 4.88s i could swap to a durango rear pretty easily (chrysler 9.25) but if i needed 5.13s i would need a dana 60 or something allong those lines

Go to the junkyard and pull you a D-70. Then throw some 35 spline moly's in it. Otherwise you get a 30 spline in the 60, unless you want to do some machining to fit the 35's. I would look into a wrecked 1 ton or 3/4 ton and pull as much as you can, including a 360 and a 47re

i think i may be on the hunt for a solid front axle.(suggestions? D44?) it took about 10 min to get stuck in the snow and turn my 4x4 into a 2x4 tonight.

a 360 would be nice... but not in the budget. i have to rebuild my bike before race season
