Default Largest tires...

My 98 Ram 1500 Sport 4x4 is due for some new tires. I've found a style I like, and they are "mountain terrain". I would like to put the largest tires that will fit under there without rubbing (width and hieight). It has the 16" wheels on it. Give it to me in "metric". I don't know the english sizes...

Thanks.

I saw your topic, but it didn't answer my question. I'm really surprised I haven't gotten an answer for this yet... seems like something a lot of people would know.....

285-305 with the original 5x5.5 off set rims would be the max for a stock halfton ram. i run 285x55x20 and no rub that equals to a 32 inch tire.

It depends on your rims... for stock rims, 285's are about the max height, I have the MT Classic II's and have room for a 295 tire which is about 33.5".

I'd say go to this website West Coast Diff... and calculate the tire size that you want to put on, then take the difference in diameter from what you have to what you want and go measure it.

turn your wheels all the way (both ways) and measure the closest point to the tire... this will give you an idea of how much more tire you can fit under there.

You can also search for the Pavementsucks.com thread that has a chart with all the tire sizes and lift combos you could imagine. I just looked for it briefly and couldnt find it. it'd take some more digging...

It also depends on the brand of tire. BFG tires tend to be quite a bit smaller than advertised size I've seen a 33x12.50 BFG that measured 30.5" tall brand new. Interco tends to be dead on. My Coopers are pretty close to advertised, within a 1/2". It's kinda a crapshoot. There's no real way to tell for 100% what will and will not fit. On a 1/2 ton I wouldn't go any bigger than a 285x75r16 on stock wheels, and a 265x75r16 on aftermarkets (depending on backspacing).

I've got 285/75r16's on Eagle Alloy aftermarket rims on my 3/4 ton right now. At full turn they rub hard on my step bars. I bet 295's would fit if it wasn't for the step bars. I'm planning on moving them back 1", but haven't gotten around to it in the year I've had these tires.

yeah 285's are the biggest you can fit on a stock 4x4. I have 315's on my 2001 off-road but i also have 6 inches of lift. But 285's shouldn't rub at all.

Yeah, looks like i'm going to be putting on 285 70 r16. They are just about the same height as what's on there, so my speedo won't be thrown off.
