If ya got a stick coming outa the steering column, ya got an automatic; if the stick is stickin straight outa the floor like the truck's horny, ya got yerself a manual.

Anyone who has a 5.9L, and hasn't done a custom conversion, has the automatic. They were only offered with the 46RE automatics.

The 5.2s were offered in manual and automatics. If its the automatic, its a 46RE.

If its the V6 (3.9L), and an automatic, its the 42RE.

darkspaceboy,

FWIW...I am in the middle of a 46RE teardown. I expect to have it up and running in a week or two.

If you plan on doing it yourself, may I suggest a couple of things.

1. Get the 46RE section (171 pages) from the 2001 dodge ram manual posted on this sight somewhere (look for the words 'Merry Christmas'). It may be a 2001, but the 46RE stuff matched up with my 1996 46RE.
2. Get the video from ATSG on the A518. It primarily deals with the barrel and OD teardown/reassembly and not much on the valve body, but just being able to watch it is awesome. If I knew how to post the video on this sight, I would. My guess is that it is 1-2 gigs in size.

ya i have the book for the 42, 46, 47RH trans, and I'm going to go look for the book for the 46RE, and ill watch the movie for it, im going to do anything that makes it easier, and learn what I'm getting in to, the only reason I'm doing it my self is because i dont have the 1500 to have someone rebuild it for me, and I'm not one of those people who likes to brake shat but don't wanna fix it. one thing where can i find a good rebuild kit? i was looking at some of these http://www.transmissioncenter.net/dodge.htm but i dont know.

thank you all for the help

I decided to get my kit from a local supplier DACCO. They supply all the shops around Memphis. Further, I was happy with the stock setup so I didn't need to beef anything up.

Before I decided on DACCO, I looked at the transmissioncenter.net and found it to be confusing (especially for a 1st timer).

Bottom line, I took my tranny apart first. Inspected all the parts and made a list of things I needed. Fortunately, all I needed was the basic stuff. But going to my local supplier allowed me to talk to them and get advice. Plus I got a rebuild kit (seals, frictions, steels), TC, new torrington bearings, transgo jr kit and new overrunning clutches for $400. You can't beat that with a stick.

Good Luck
