I have a standard 99 dodge ram 2500, and about a month and a half ago it started to rev up to 3500 rpms before shifting to second every now and then. The usual shifting taking place around 2000. I began to use the manual 1st gear into second gear to get it unstuck. This worked fine, but knew it was a quick fix to the real problem. Now it is starting to have problems switching from 2nd to 3rd, and sometimes when cruising around 20-25 mphs in neighborhoods,it will hover between 1st and 2nd and cant decide which one in wants to go into. I changed out the transmission fluid/filter/gasket laster fall, and didn't have problems till last month. Any ideas on what this could be?

 

A common problem that we have with these transmissions (assuming its a 46RE) is that the governor pressure sensor and solenoid end up going bad. I was having similar problems after I rebuilt my transmission (it was slipping going into 2nd) and I replaced these two parts and the problem went right away. The local trans shop near me charged about $150 total for both parts.

 

Mines actually doing something pretty similar but way worse I think.
The check engine light was on and the mechanic replaced a solenoid and it just made it way worse and now I'm pissed off cuz the thing is like not drivable. He said "I think you just waited too long to get a new solenoid on it" which might have been bull**** I'm gonna go argue with the ******* tomorrow.

Thanks guys. Earlier today, before I read your replys, I did a trans kit. It fixed the problem...for about 15 minutes. I think you guys are right on with the sensor/solenoid, it didn't feel mechanical, but electonics not working smoothly since I could manually shift no problem. I ordered up the parts to come in on monday and will replace first thing. Bummer I just filled the trans up, but small price to pay for a working vehicle, and not having to replace the whole trans before landscaping season. Thanks again, I appreciate your help.

Good work guys. I finished it all up yesterday evening. It is running beautifully now. I almost lost my mind when I saw the wiring go up further into the transmission. But I was figuring (praying) the wiring was good, and just reconnected the new sensor and solenoid to the old wiring. Thanks again for the help.

The wire actually just runs up on top of the valve body. If you were to pop the valve body all the way out (about a dozen bolts) then you could replace the cable also if needed. If you look on the drivers side of the trans you will see an electrical connector near the shift linkage. That is the connector that the wire runs up to.
