Transmission Cooler recommedations needed

I agree, bigger is better. I have a Flex-a-lite rated at 32,000 GVW. It made a difference, my gauge does not lie.

I have the cooler that is one size down from Reid's. Mine is rated for 28,000 GVW. Before I removed the check valve, added an external filter, and the cooler, my trans temps were around 180*/190* in 70* weather. After installing ^, My temps hover around 140*/160* in 50* weather.

I would recomend removing the check valve and installing an external filter.

I have used coolers with copper tubing in them. I've used them on 4 wheel drive p/u's, and motorhomes and have always had the best luck. They work well and never failed me. I can't recall the brand name of the ones I use but they are out there. What is nice about them is if they spring a leak they can be solder back up as I have seen it done. They need to be flushed good before repairing them but it is possible. I always used more cooler then necessary to give me the extra protection. I also heard that they should be installed in parallel with any other cooler including the one in the radiator tank.

god i want to do that check valve thing. after reading that diy though i'm completely and utterly lost with all those fittings and crap. i'm not a mechanic . would a transmission shop be able to do this or is this strictly a do it yourself thing.

haha, i read both. i shoulda attempted to do this when i replaced the radiator a couple months ago. had to take that hose off anyways.

When I finally get around to doing mine (pitiful tax refund), I'm going to plumb it in series (downstream) from the factor rad cooler.

Also, never understood why the check valve is so bad. Is it that much of a flow restriction? Isn't it there to keep the cooling circuit filled with fluid?

The check valve is there to keep the converter filled with fluid while the truck is sitting for a long time. We remove the check valve because the ball in the check valve can clog up with fluid. If it clogs up, fluid cant get to the cooler, the tranny overheats, and it is toast.
