Angry After adjusting the rear band......HELP!!

This weekend I changed the Transmission fluid/filters(I have 2), and installed a drain plug in the pan. While I had the pan off, I thought that I might as well adjust the rear band as the maintnance schedule recommends. My service manual(and Haynes manual) say to torque the adjusting screw to 72 inch pounds and back off 2 turns. When I started to adjust the screw, I noticed how much the screw tightened up when I adjusted it. So I get the pan on and all that ****.....When I go to drive it, the tranny feels like it skips the gear, then goes into the gear. One time the motor died. So, I get the truck back in the driveway, Drain the pan(eaisest drain ever!), and I adjust the screw back to where I thought it was originally. So I get everything in and on and go to drive it. The tranny didnt feel like it skipped the gear anymore, and the motor never died, but it still slips.

What did I do wrong with adjusting the rear band? I didnt adjust the front band, could that be the source of my problems? I am taking the truck to the guy who built the transmission 30,000 miles ago to see what can be done.

I feel for you man. I hate that feeling when something gets jacked up. Honestly, I think once you take it back to your tranny guy, it's just a matter of him adjusting the rear band properly. If that's the only part you adjusted then that's the part that's the problem. Best of luck.

Did you back off the lock nut 6 turns or so before you torque'd the screw? And then hold the screw in position while you tightened the lock nut?

Well, you did something wrong, because if it was done correctly you should have no probs. And besides, I know you've heard it before. But, if it ain't broke.... well you know the rest.

BTW, if it's slipping now, I would tow it to the tranny place before too much damage is done. JMO

Live and learn. Wont mess with the tranny unless I am changing the fluid. I'll let the pros do the complicated **** from now on.

I may get it towed.

I won't touch anything unless there's a problem for just this reason. If it's working, it's happy. Leave it alone.

I'm going to have my dad re-adjust the band and see what happens.
