Unhappy Tranny Gurus needed... no 2nd gear

Gurus.... I have searched the forums for 2 hours... some really great information.. thanks to all for sharing.... BUT.....

The answer to my problem I was unable to find ...

This weekend for no reason... I suddenly could not get the shifter into park (later it returned to normal). Ok I thought... I will deal with that later.... off I went... and now it won't go into 2nd at all. I need to lift and let the tranny shift into 3rd, then lightly apply throttle until it gets past the "2nd gear kickdown speed"... and then everything is normal...

After stopping to get fuel (presto, park returned) and checking the fluid while hot (it was correct) it still will not get 2nd gear.

Using the shifter does not change the outcome, still no 2nd gear...

It doesn't even try... its not shifting and slipping..just plan not shifting ???

I read about govener pressure solenoid and sensor.... could this stop it shifting into 2nd gear ???

I still have normal P,R, N,1st, 3rd 4th and OD

Truck is a 1999 1500 Ram 4x4 with a 360 engine.

Thanks in advance for any help and insight !

Any codes? Thought the sensor would throw a code.

Also, doesn't seem like you have an electrical (sensor) issue. Just went through electrical issues with my trans and that really effects your tranny shifting on its own. I could always shift manually into all gears but overdrive.

Sad to say.. no codes.. I checked last night !!

I am old school, and can't help but wonder if something is stuck in a valve ??

Seems like it has to be mechanical. I'd drop the pan and valve body and look for signs of something busted initially. Could be a plugged up passage way in the valve body I suppose, but not sure that would have given you your park issue. Assuming they are related?

Great news.... after phoning numerous trans shops and trying to get a comfort level with their knowledge and experience ( not the normal...well we will need to look at it .. might need a new one crap) I came across the most knowledgeaable tranny tech.

Matt at Forrer Dodge in Duncannon PA, listened to what I said and straight away diagnosed a "broken strut". He even said that when its breaks it drops down and interferes with the park mechanism. This morning he dropped the pan and valve body and presto... there was the broken strut.. he replaced it and now its good to go again !!!

Kudos to Matt and Forrer Dodge in Duncannon PA !

Great. Congrats. Figured it had to be something along those lines, just not enough of a guru to know exactly.
