I had this same issue on my 2000 VW Passat. I took a chance and got an engine flush and high mileage oil. I drove one hour on the highway and 3 miles on a rode that I hit almost every light. The oil pressure has not dropped to zero on my 99 Ram yet. Fingers are crossed but feel confident.

 

I have a 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 5.7 liter. My question is where is the oil pressure sensor located and how do I swap it out for a new one.

Its just off to the pass side of the dizzy on the back of the motor, you will need a deep socket or get a oil sender socket. Clean the area around the old sender before you remove it, then install the new sending unit. It can be a pita to change as its not in the most convenient spot.

 

i had to do this recently. im short so easiest way for me to get to it was to take off the air filter housing and lay over the throttle body so i could reach. worst part was the connector clip which you need to slid the red piece over, i broke mine had to get a new connector from the dealer. about 35-40 dollars for a normal customer but i get a nice discount through work. anyway once i got it off put the socket on it basically broken in half with no effort. i hand screwed it back in because you can mess it up with too much force which i also learned the hard way. next is the seal on my distributor which im pretty nervous to try on my own dont want to mess up the timing, pretty sure thats where a leak is coming from. just so hard to get to.

 

don't break the electrical connector. slide the red tab sideways and hear it click, then it pulls right off.

I went through the same thing. I replaced the sensor and then he oil pump. worked good for about a little over a year and now its doing the same thing. will drop to zero at a light and if you nudge the gas it goes right back up and no knocking at all. I was told to replace it with a high volume pump and the problem will go away and not come back. has anyone heard that?

 

Get a mechanical gauge so you know what your oil pressure really is, the OEM gauge isn't reliable at all. If your oil pressure is actually low, plastigage your bearings and replace if they're worn and it's also a simple matter to check the clearances in your pump to tell if it's worn, or just replace it. Main and rod bearings and oil pump really don't cost much.

 

I could be wrong ,but, I'm thinking a "2009" 5.7 does not have the oil pressure switch in the same location as a 2nd gen ram .

 

It must be a newer 2nd gen truck thing eh? My 96 does not have this little red pita tab, just a reg clip push on and lift to remove.
