Mopar99, I have the same problem as you. My pressure remained steady all the time, then about 10,000 miles ago it started fluctuating with temp and rpm. Interested to hear solutions as this problem concerns me, too.

Anyone know how costly and difficult it is to change a pump???

Default oil pessure

thanks my truck has only 98000 miles so im going to run some engine flush through the motor then im going to just replace the pump with a standard melling pump not the high volume one. i will let you know if that solves the problem.

a little more trouble than it should be.
here's a good article from pavement.
i replaced my oil pump and rear seal a couple of years ago.
the hardest part was getting the damn starter off.
it seems like you should be able to get the oil pan off w/o removing the inspection cover and starter, but i was unable to do so.

i did not have to drop the exhaust, nor raise the engine like haynes manual says.

Cool Dodge gone wrong

My oldest has a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 with a 5.2 Mag Motor it was setting for about 7 months we got new tires on it and put gas in it this truck is in pristine condition for a 99 i drove it in to town yesterday and it did fine as i left town it did something very weird the Oil Pressure Gauge spiked to about 80 when i accelerated and started making very weird noises sounded like the engine or transmission was gonna fall out of it ... this truck drives very smooth so the vibrations and bouncing were warnings once i let off the gas the oil pressure would slowwwly drop. i got it home and we checked the oil someone put to much oil in the truck so we drained some and got it down to the " safe " level checked transmission fluid its good too ..i started it up and the oil pressure gauge was sitting between 40psi and 80psi ( im guessing its the line before 110) the truck idles high then low then high and then low oil gauge still wont go down i put the truck in reverse and backed down the driveway and finely the Oil Gage is sitting at 40psi...now when i test drove it up and down the road the oil gauge still goes up but then comes back down ....Question is ...is this thing possessed or is this a sign that damage has been done or is it normal?.... i haven't got it up to highway speeds just yet to see if its still making weird noises but we don't want to cause damage to this NEW MOTOR...i have 5 Chevy trucks and everyone of them always set at 40 psi on oil unless they run low then a light comes on..... so the Dodge thing is all new to us.

What's your rpm at idle at operating temp in Park?

My pressure starts off at a steady 60psi then when it warms up it starts to drop then after its warm it idles around 19-20psi and goes up and down between 60 and 20 as the rpm's change. i changed the oil pressure switch and it did the exact same thing then i put on a mechanical oil pressure guage and it does the same thing still. my two questions are what is the normal idle and driving oil pressure for the 5.2L motor. And if my pressure is not normal should i just replace my oil pump? or is there something else i should look at? Thanks for looking.
Your oil pressure is gonna read high before the engine is warmed up because the oil is cold which in turn is thicker than it'll be after it's heated, that's normal, but it being at 20psi is not normal, the normal for a 5.2l is around 40psi at idle at operating temp in Park with your idle speed being at about 750rpm..... Your oil pressure shouldn't drop under acceleration, it should go up, now, it might drop slightly when your transmission up shifts into the next gear but then it should go back up some...I would prolly be looking at the oil pump, there should be a screen type filter on the end of the pickup tube to the oil pump, there's a chance that screen is clogged up with slug, the new 3.0l Eco diesels have a problem with that happening and if not caught in time, can eventually burn up the oil pump
