Default Crank case gasket?

So I previously thought that my truck was leaking anti freeze from the water pump and that the gasket had gone bad but after taking the fan shroud, etc off I came the the conclusion that that wasn't the case.. My friend suggested to me that it was the Crank case gasket; does this look right? If so, is this something that you novice car person could tackle on their own? I'm not what you'd call the most experienced mechanic but I've tackled jobs on my own before.

Included is a pic so you can see where the leak is actually coming from. (the tension pulley is removed to give a better view)

('98 v8 5.9L)

EDIT: For a better visual on where it's leaking from, where the big red blob is on upper right, to the left of that is where the leak is actually coming from.

i believe thats the top of the timing cover.
not too bad. replace water pump while you have it off.
timing chain if its high mileage.

So you think it's at the top of the timing cover that the anti freeze is leaking from?

that how i see the pic. looks like its coming from the gap between the aluminum color piece on the right (timing cover) and the blacker cast iron block on the left.

the other option would be coming out of the intake gasket, or the head gasket.

how do you see it ?

can you crank it ? clean it all off good and crank it up and see...

It's dark out now but tomorrow I will whip the area dry, take a pre/post picture, as well as a video of when I do start it.

EDIT: For a better visual on where it's leaking from, where the big red blob is on upper right, to the left of that is where the leak is actually coming from.

That's exactly how mine looked when the timing chain cover gasket was leaking.

I'm assuming you did the job yourself? Any advice on it?

Also a quick question dhvaughan, by the looks of your pics, it seems as if all you had to take off was the alternator, fan, tension pulley, and water pump to get to the timing case. Is this correct?

As of right now all I have pulled off is the fan/fan shroud and tension pulley.

no. from (poor) memory - also unbolt a/c compressor and swing it over to passenger fender. remove accy bracket, crank pulley, and harmonic balancer.

someone recently did this, and there was a pretty good thread and a nice homemade tool to hold the crank for balancer removal. i'll look for it tonight.

Alright, that'd be great. I'll also get the new pics up in a few hours once I'm home from school.

This deal sounds like it's going to be one hell of a job to do.
