Angry MSD Spark Box

I have recently installed a MSD box, cold air sys, 2" TB spacer, all works great but timing need to be dropped back 10 deg according to MSD.

Once the truck warms up it gets difficult to start, lack of better words starts like a high compression engine. My dilemma is no-one with Dodge wants to discuss it. They tell me it can't be done??

So what to do??

you cannot mechanically adjust timing base or advance. these are controlled by the PCM, you will have to use a tuner to adjust it.

which box did you buy? i havent heard of this problem.

Angry MSD Spark Box

The box is a MSD-6A Ignition Control with a MSD replacement coil according to MSD it is compatible with my rig, but it gives my starter hell. Brought it into Dodge they didn't see any incompatibility issues.

According to a local mechanic he said the timing will self adjust at start up and while the truck is running during normal operation.

I thought I might have missed a step or had gotten a bad part but Dodge check out the wiring, coil, distributor, spark plugs, basically everything back to computer.

They say no problem but the starting is a pain.

well it sounds like the box has messed up the startup timing retard. maybe try calling MSD and asking about this problem.

the computer is supposed to retard the timing for startup to prevent this very problem.

I recommend to get rid of the TB spacer. Does absolutely nothing for port injected trucks like ours, may even hurt your performance a little.

What coil are you running?

Disconnect both battery clamps from the terminals and touch them together
(off the battery of course). See if a good old PCM reset don't fix it.

How did you hook up the stock replacement msd coil to the stock coil plug ?? gotta use the accel coil plug to use on your year truck , msd cap and rotor ? didnt know they even made that for the truck (must be something new) I take it the truck starts normal with out the MSD hookup ? Plus if any machanic worth there weight they would of seen when they hook up the scanner that you would have a soft code..

If, after installing an MSD Ignition Control, your ta*chometer, fuel pump relay or electronic fuel injection doesn’t operate correctly, your ap*plication may require a Tach Adapter. This is due to the trigger signal not being strong enough to trigger both the MSD and the factory’s components. There are a few Tach Adapters available and for more information see pages 152 and 153. Each Adapter is simple to wire in and will have your MSD and vehicle firing away in no time! If you are triggering an MSD Blaster, 5, 6, SCI, or 7 Series Ignition with its white wire or points terminal, you will need the PN 8910 Tach Adapter. The PN 8910 will correct the operation of most voltage-triggered tachometers or fuel injection systems that do not work directly off the tach output terminal of the MSD Ignition Unit.

Don't know what part number the adapter was got the information from MSD direct, purchased box, coil and adapter from Summit Racing. Gave information to them arrived in box all together. Installed everything worked no cutting or rigging needed.

Everything else on the truck works as it should, no other adapters needed, fuel, tack everything working.

Just hard to start once warms up.
