Question Shaving the axles.

I was on pavementsucks.com And some one said something that we can shave down are axels. Under the diff's that way they wont drag as much in the mud. I know I have gone through a few holes and I could fell them digging in. When the hole dryed up there was about 1/4 Of drag. Has anyone ever done this or have a clue what I'm talking about? I want to make them look like the off-road axles.

I have done it on other vehicles but not a dodge. All you are doing is removing some of the cast metal. You have to be carefully not to remove to much or you will weaken your axle housing. Most people only end up taking 1/4" or so off the bottom which isnt a whole lot. The only reason I did it was to make it easier to drag it across stuff with out getting hung up.

The axles on an Off-Road are trussed, with more metal around the differential. That would be the opposite of shaving them.

Just get more lift and bigger tires. That will help you clear far more then shaving the axle.

Lifting your truck does not make the axles further from the ground.

I know, bigger tires do though. And you need the lift to fit the bigger tires. Following now.

spending time grinding away 1/4" of cast iron off the bottom of the differential housing to improve clearance in the mud sounds like the most stupid waste of time i've ever heard off.
