I just posted about the tranny cooler lines and have decided to do the check valve removal this weekend. I as looking into the additional cooler/removal of my K&N CAI...

So my new question is: From those who have used both, what do you like better, the round filter or the typical CAI run down to the radiator?

thanks,
sully

since you're deleting the check ball you should add an external cooler as well. they make the trans run about 20º cooler. i just got mine rebuilt and the guy couldn't figure out why the transmission was overheating on the test drive but after some checking he figured out that it was the cooler. the one he originally put on there was the common one that has a line going in the top and snaking its way down to the bottom and you could see the line through the ribs, that one was no good and he put one on there thats similar to a radiator and now theres no problem, the transmission is sits at a steady 175º when hot and thats what he was shooting for. with the other style cooler it was 250º after a 10 minute trip. and with it being that hot it wanted to start off in second gear and i believe he said that it wouldn't go into overdrive either. but its all good now.
also the original cooler in the transmission has an insulating material in it that will break down and clog up the check ball in the line and your transmission filter. so you don't want to have a splitter and run the new one with the old one, you just want a high quality, radiator style cooler. and if you put one on, check the temp on the cooler and transmission pan/housing after a test drive and if its over 200 then you need a different brand/style of cooler.

i've heard a lot of good things about the round filters and i have the cai that goes down to the other side of its little wall by the radiator. i haven't had any problems with mine and i can't remember if i even saw a performance diff with it on there. i can't swap it out for my stock box to check either because a friend of mine traded his in for an 08 ram and i took his cai and put my stock box on his. also, how much room do you have between your throttle body and the plastic piece on top of your firewall below the windshield? it seems like my engine sits higher than all the other magnums i've seen, 5.2 and 5.9 and thats why i haven't gotten a round filter for myself yet. also i read a post a couple days ago where a guy on here found out that the round filters don't like mud. so if you're gonna get into some, you'll have to get a cover for it.

Ya know I've had both. Really like the round air cleaner when I first switched from the
K&N FIPK but after a while I wasn't all that impressed. I think if I did it again I would not
have switched from the FIPK.

Not problems with my CAI. Just don't hit the holes to hard. You don't want to hydro lock it.

You might be hitting the wiring harness. You gotta displace it so to say lol. I had to break the plastic wire holder and push it back. That was the only way I could make it fit
