Excessive Idle Speed Plus
My idle speed has increased from normal up to an area between 1100 to 1200. I have no check engine light comming on, so there is no code to read.
My mechanic spent an hour looking for various signs of causes such as vacum leaks, to scanning with the hand held type scanner.
Turned out the idle speed motor was showing sign of wear out so it was replaced. He then told me once replaced to take a drive and ger it up to 60 mph, this apparently resets the computer.
When I returned back to the garage it was cured, and operating as normal. I then drove less than a mile to the Bank, and at the first stop light it was back at high idle.
This problem still exsists off and on from normal to high idle, and at times it smells as though its running rich.
I just cam back from MA, with a car on my Trailer on the way down, and all went well up until about 2 hours of our destination. At that time the surging began and the T.C. was in and out of lockup.
I don't tow in Over-Drive, but at some points on I-90 on route to MA., there are some pretty good hills, and I put it in Over-Drive on the down side. On the way home we came up through NH., &, VT. and I drove with empty Trailer in Direct all the way back home to ON. Canada.
Short of writing a book here what else can I do to rid this problem. I haven't as of yet changed the TPS. I have put a C.O.2. Sensor on, and a Muffler shop Cat about 10,000 miles ago with the C.O.2. there as well. My Truck currently has 196,000 Miles not KM on it with a Tranny Rebuild at 153,000 new rad which caused it to fry in the first place, Plus a complete engine rebuild about 9000 miles ago.
Anyway I have quite a bit of coin in this Truck, I look after it and people can't believe its a 94 as to the condition.
Short of that any advice as to what to do next, as to the problem fix.
Thanks in advance for any help, I'm into this to deep to quit now

If you are NOT throwing a CEL then logic would dictate that one or more of the sensors is indicating to the PCM that the engine needs more fuel. My wife's Saturn had the exact same problem and I ended up changing the TPS. Not that I want to blame the TPS but if you read the sensor/emmision explanation in your manual you MAY be able to narrow things down.
As a side note, my "rebuilt" TC only lasted 75000 km (43000 miles), there was actually nothing else wrong with the trans (except for clogged gov. sensors), just needed a new TC and a THOROUGH cleaning. After finding a shop that specializes in truck (read dodge) trannies, the fellow had one open on the counter and proceeded to show me that if you overtorque the flex bolts just a little too much you dimple the thin TC housing and guess what? The damn lockup clutch rides exactly on this surface! So I bought a TC with a billet front on this rebuild.

I know this may seem a little over-kill, but since the trans rebuild I have changed the Transmission Filter & Oil 3 times since the rebuild.
First off after a rebiold I usually expect a few filings to be dropped in the pan during breakin. Once this has been done, I'm off feeling that I have done the right move.
Also since I put a lot of miles on my Truck, and with towing a car Hauler I like to keep the service up on it.
My new concern is that excessive Idle ranging from 1000-1200, and if its the TPS, then I will go with a new one. The current one that is on the Truck at present is just short of 100,000 Miles on it, not Kilometers.
As I had mentioned above the Idle Speed motor was changed a little over a week ago took it out for a test drive and all was well. It then began all over again and just does it intermently.
This electronic B/S can drive a guy half crazy.
I will say that this little 318 has sure supprised the hell out of me, and it just runs along as new, with exception to the above.
Hell maybe a Diesel is or may be a solution, or a bigger headache.
If I were to go the latter route it would be a 12 Valve.
