I've used the lucas in the gas before (have a big bottle of the stuff in the garage), but im hesitant on the engine restore. Lately i've been blowing smoke on startup sometimes so I think it is my piston rings. I may break down and actually try the engine restore, but first I think I am going to throw in a heavier oil to see what happens. What weight would you guys recommend? 10w40 or something different?

I'm going to say its exhaust valve seals are weeping. That where your smoke is coming from. But once running the exhaust back pressure keep it from leaking. So changing weight of oil is really going to solve the problem.

If it was rings or intake valve seals the smoke will be the all the time... (More so on long downhill grades)

The intake valve stem seals are just as much likely to be leaking also. Changing weight oil will not help much if any.

It is possible to replace the seals without removing the heads you know.

Yeah... but I've thought for the past two years that my heads were cracked for some odd reason (just have that feeling) expecially after everyone elses started poping up. I get a wierd stumble on startup sometimes which I can't seem to cure for the past two years no matter what I replace. I've wanted to do a compression test for a good while, but never got around to it. Plenum is still stock with 104k on the clock. I've concentrated on other stuff with the truck, and I guess its time to start working on the motor. But right now inspection and registration are on the chopping block first.

You really need to check the plenum, before you go thinking you need to replace heads.
