Default 408 decission...

I was interested in doing the 408 stroker kit on my 360 in my '99 dodge ram 1500. I talked with a friend who said he did the same to his engine and said he had a ton of problems.

-He said the angle on the connecting rods were really whacked caused knocking.
-Had problems starting in the cold, i live in canada... yup yup with the polar bears... the winters can get to -22f
-He said his gas mileage was shot to hell 5mpg

I want to know if the 408 stroker is a good idea or if im gonna regret it once its done. I got 35" tires on the truck it wold be nice to have some extra HP to turn them... im just starting to wonder if the 408 kit is a good idea?

I want to hear from ppl who have done this kit, if they have any problems. I know my gas mileage sucked before... being a 5.9L and all but how much worse was it afterwards?

I recently spent a lot of time kicking around the stroker kit, but ultimately decided to go with gears instead. Not sure you should even think of putting the words 35's and 408 in the same sentence as gas mileage...lol

A lot of the problems that your buddy is having sound like a poor tuning job. The knocking could also be the machine shop did not clearance the block properly? I can't say from personal experience as I still have not finished my stroker motor yet.

Who has a completed 408? I've read a lot of threads with builds in progress, just haven't seen someone who has a completed project yet.

half done with a 408 right now. will or should be done in a coulple of weeks. Talked to an awesome tuner guy who has a 99 ram with a stroker and turbo runing 17 mpg. Soulds like your buddy did not tune or build or get his whole set-up working together very well. Check out my thread i think its named 408 stroker prodject. (btw my little bro built a 360 right out of high school for his scamp(dart) and it gets 14.5 mpg and runs 12.00 in the quarter.

Maybe you could get him to post some info on what he did for his and what his experience has been with it. I'm sure we all would be interested!
