if something that severe doesn't make it on the report there is no telling what else is missed as well

You guys are right, its not an "end all" for research on cars when car shopping. However, it is better than not doing a background check at all, IMO.
My father in law uses a slightly different service, similar to Carfax, that is supposedly better, but I can't recall the name at the moment. So there are others out there as well.

+1 on not trusting carfax....what gets reported to carfax is hit or miss, it all depends on if the entity (dealership, insurance, etc) actually reports to carfax. my ram had a run in with a parking meter many years ago that ended poorly for the truck, the front wheel was ripped off and the damage was in excess of $12k....to this day it does not show up on the carfax report for my truck.
