Question 96' 3.9 V6 DTC Code 11 - STRANGE

OK it's been a while since I been here.. but I've got a problem that is the cause of furious head-scratching and I seriously need some help with this one. I've got a 1996 Dodge Ram 3.9 V6 that I put a brand new motor and rebuilt tranny in few months back. It ran beautiful for a while and just recently I'm getting a Code 11, and the damn thing runs rough.

Code:
Code 11: No Crank reference signal at PCM

-No Distributor reference signal detected during engine cranking. Check the circuit between the distributor and PCM.
Now I should probably mention a few things, first of which that this came about shortly after I was making adjustments to the fuel synchronization. Also, the code seems to be intermittent. Sometimes I will start the truck and it's there, other times there is no check engine light at all and I can drive for a few miles before it throws the code again (I have done the key trick when there is no light and it shows no codes stored).

Now here's the STRANGE part.... one day I was holding the idle up to around 3000rpm after starting it and I noticed that while holding the pedal perfectly still the rpm will actually fluctuate up or down, rhythmically, most likely due to poor fuel sync setting. Then all of a sudden... the engine 'cut' out for a split second, the check engine light went off and the idle went up much higher, no longer fluctuating as I held the idle up! I have no idea why this would occur, loose ground maybe? But I am able to recreate the event whenever I want. If I start the truck in the morning and the check engine light is on, before I leave I will hold the idle up until the check engine light goes away and then drive off to work, truck running great all the way there too.

All the research I've done regarding code 11 indicates that the truck should not be running at all, and gives advice to diagnose a 'no-start condition', but the truck still runs, albeit a bit rough when the light is on.

Code:
When the crank sensor fails, the engine will die but no code is set. Code 11 will only set if the computer has never seen a pulse from the crankshaft rotation sensor. If the engine has been running in the past, this code will not be set because the computer remembers that the sensor was working. To check for this fault, the computer memory must be erased.

Any light anyone can shed on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Angry No replies?

No replies sucks... but I did manage to fix the issue. Turns out there was a very slow leak at the back of the intake manifold seeping down, and over time caking lot of my precious Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil onto the sensor. Replaced the intake manifold gasket set and cleaned off the sensor and now all is well and back to normal.
