Default State of diff confusion

OK, on Tuesday I changed the rear diff fluid to synthetic. The manual says the Dana 70 takes 7.5 pints to refill including the limited slip additive. Put in an 8oz tube of that and less than 2 and a half bottles of Mobil 1 before it started dribbling out the fill hole. That's less than 6 pints. WTF?

Today, I changed the front fluid. As soon as I pulled the plug it starts gushing out. I figure it probably has water in it, but nothing but clean gear oil comes out. Manual says the Dana 60 takes 8.5 pints. With what fell on the ground and what went in the pan I had a little over a gallon. Guess that's close to correct, but I'm baffled about the rear. And I pulled the cover on both and cleaned them out well, so no residual. I'm concerned about my rear because I don't want my limited slip grenading on me. Any thoughts?

Flat driveway. Checked it again today and it took maybe 3-4 ozs. I'll check it again tomorrow because I'll be driving out to the motocross track on Saturday and it's 90 miles each way with a steep grade on the way up.

I Don't think it will take much more. Your diff is only so big and will only take so much.

I know, but why such a disparity between what the manual says is the capacity and what I was able to put into it? By my calculations I am more than a quart below what the manual calls for.

Are the stock gears in it? New gears are bigger so it would take less fluid. You can return the unused oil or keep it for the next one?

my rear diff, Chrysler 9 1/4, took 2 and a half bottles when I changed it to royal purple. Maybe it was a misprint?

depending on how long you waited after you drained it( to let silicon set up or whatever) the only thing i can think of is whatever was left in the axle tubes drained down to the diff. area filling it up.. if you want to try and get more in. pick up on one side of the axle, put it down, then the other, then fill the diff again..just a guess. and if you put Syn. in, im not sure but i dont think you have to add the additive..I though the manual said if you add syn you dont have to. I may be wrong though.

I thought so, too, but seems about right for a 2500 with towing and camper packages. The front diff took 4 quarts (8 pints) and it does less work than the rear. Found this site and it matches what the manual says.
