Hey, New member returning Dodge owner. I just picked up this truck about 2 weeks ago and need a little advice before I start replacing everything.
Spec's:
1995 2500 Reg Cab 4x4 5.9

Just picked the truck up from having exhaust replaced, new cat and flowmaster. The cat was so plugged the intake was sucking air like a vacuum and I could not get more than 5mph. Before that I thought I had my fuel pump going out it would turn over but not fire. Ended up replacing the relay and cut off seemed to cure that problem.

On way home from work tonight engine started surging and seemed to feel like it was loaded up or missing? Throttle and it would blow back through the intake and just sputter but then come on and run good for a couple of seconds. Wondering if it is the fuel pump or electrical or all of the above.

Any help is appreciated, have plenty more details didn't want to write a book.

 

What about the fuel filter? I would try changing that first. when you pull off the old one take a coffee filter and pour the contents that come out of the tank side of the filter into it and see if you see fine plastic particles. That would be a good sign of a failing fuel pump.

 

Thanks for the advice, I am strongly leaning toward the fuel filter myself. I will keep an eye out for the plastic pieces as well.

Turns out it was the Crank Position sensor, I was loosing spark. But I don't regret swapping out the fuel pump, I have only owned this truck about three weeks, bought it with 100k on it and believe it has been put through hell by the previous owner.
Just a list of everything I have replaced in 3 weeks:
Crank Position Sensor
TPS
IAC
cap, rotor, Cam Shaft Positioner(coil pick up), spark plugs, wires
fuel pump
complete exhuast, cat and muffler

and yesterday when I pulled into my drive way I got out and was greeted with a squirting radiator hose, some how got a pin hole leak in the lower hose...was spraying like a garden hose.

Can't complain though, I knew I was going to be spending a lot of time getting this truck into shape.

 

Glad to hear you got her up and running again Rock. I haven't had to do as many electrical components as you but just about everything else on my truck had to be fixed. I think we both got our trucks from the same kind of previous owners. You know the kind that don't do anything to their trucks till it's good and broke. Good thing our trucks now have owners like us who love them enough to take good care of them.

No offense man, but read all the responses before you post one yourself. Issue has already been resolved, and it wasn't the filter.

 

I'll beat the dead horse a little bit here. Technically we do have a fuel filter in these trucks. Two if you look at it in an odd way. One is basically a mesh screen at the bottom of the pickup. The other is at the top of the pump on the solenoid ( I think I know it is part of an electrical component, Jason you know?)
Both are a really coarse filter, and 90% of the time it will not be your problem.

TO the OP, Glad to hear you got it fixed.... Well part of the problems

 

on the 95 rams the filter is in the tank with the pump. there is no external filter on the fuel line. if you change the pump hopfully not but if you do get a factory one from dodge dont bother with the auto parts store one they wont last. factory fuel pumps for the 95 are pricey but worth it.
