Default Transmission Issues... Shifting

I have a 2001 ram 2500- First off ill start by describing my situation.. Shifting from 2nd-3rd+ is the problem. It usually hits about 3500 and i have to play with it before it shifts. In the past i could shift into neutral then back into drive and it would shift but it doesnt even do that anymore. even more recently, its been downshiftin when im cruising at 40mph and it flys to 4500rpm.

its recently had plenty of work done to the transmission. new torque converter, pump, governer pressure switch, O2 sensors. the probelms started before the replaced parts and continuted after.

i read online that taking it to the dealer and having the computer re-flashed may be a cure-all but im a little hesitant..

any suggestions?

Does downshift randomly when you are cruising? Or are you saying that it hits 4500 when you downshift?

Sorry for being unclear, it very randomly downshifts when im cruising and when it downshifts its then taching at 4500.

it also has trouble engaging into drive after i go in reverse. starting off in reverse or drive is fine, its just that switch from R to D. could this all be the same problem or something different?

I ended up dropping the pan and saw some major metallic debris. Not sure thats what is considered shavings because its almost silt like (very very fine). You can rub it inbetween your fingers and see it but its so light you cant feel it. My solution was to drain the fluid, clean pan as best as i could, replace solonoid and pressure sensor and (i think most important) was install an inline filter on the line to cooler. I would have liked to get the filter coming from cooler going to transmission but i guessed wrong and said screw it and left it. the filter got completely clogged once and due to a pressure bypass, dirt got back in and started shifting problems again. i replaced the filter and put pressure gauge on the filter housing so i know when its getting full. the filter was just a cheapy jap hydro canister. i wanna say 10 or 20micron so thats pretty good.. could be wrong. let me know if you want any pictures of my setup or anything else i ran across. im just happy if this helps anyone else because i know how much the problem irritated me

yes but that may or may not have been the problem. it alreayd had newer ones in it. i think the debris gets into to solonoid and messes it up. there is a very fine screen on it but not sure it catches the fine metallic particulate

I believe what you're talkin about is clutch material. My solenoid's screen was completely clogged in the same manner as well as my filter.
