If backpressure is so good for the motor why don't you run a 1" pipe? Or better yet stick a potato in there.

I have always been told the same thing. Unless its a built racing engine some back pressure is good.

It can wear out your valve seals I think it is if you run too often without any

IT'S NOT BACK PRESSURE DAMMIT. This has got to be the most widely misinformed subject on this entire forum. It's exhaust "scavenging"...

Exhaust scavanging occures during intake/exhaust valve overlap. Overlap is where both the exhaust and intake are open at the same time. During the over lap, the velocity of the exiting exhaust gases create a better condition for drawing air intake. That's why you lose performance with an exhaust system that's too large. The exhaust pulses take longer to travel through the system. So they're allowed to cool more. Thus becoming more dense and stacking up on each other

Back pressure is when there is any amount of resistance that the piston has to push against to force the exhaust gases out. That just wastes power.

Somebody had **** in their cereal this morning.

I don't care. I don't have a damn engine to worry about it

Cereal Killer has hit the nail on the head. When you hear people talking about needing "backpressure" for low end torque, it's really the scavenging effect you desire. Backpressure is NEVER good to have.
At sufficient rpm's the engine will blow the exhaust out more efficiently, but down low, you really need some degree of scavenging to build that torque...
