I have a 94 Ram 1500 Long Box 5.9L 2WD with only 204,000 miles on it. My question is on the driveshaft. I got under there the other day and noticed a crack in the plastic casing that goes around what seems to be carbon or fiberglass. I am only getting a very slight vibration but do intend to get it replaced. Should I be worried that the shaft will split in two or is this just to protect the shaft from the elements. I dont want to keep driving it until I find a cheap used one if this is a major saftey concern. Please let me know your thoughts.

i thought drive shafts were steel or aluminum. i don't get out much but i've never heard of carbon or fiberglass. are you sure ?

 

are you talking about the drive shaft or the housing on the back of the transmission that the yoke slips into?

 

No it is definatly the drive shaft. There is a crack in the Black plastic that goes around the shaft. Under the cover there is a chauky while powder on it. Im not sure maybe the drive shaft is aluminum under there but the plastic is still cracked just curious what anyone thinks.

I think you need to get us a picture because AFAIK all Dodge full-size trucks use steel driveshafts.
