Default Programming process

Looks like we are 'remote ready' if the automatic door locks lock when the truck gets to 15mph.

Also, here's the programming process:
Programming Additional Transmitters
Up to four transmitters can be programmed. When programming a new transmitter, all transmitters intended for use with this vehicle, except the transmitter used to start the programming mode, must be programmed within the 30-second programming mode. To program a transmitter, turn the ignition switch to the ON position with the vehicle stopped. Press and hold the unlock button on a currentlt programmed transmitter for a minimum of four seconds and a maximum of ten seconds. While pressing the unlock buttor, press and release the panic button. Release the unlock button and a single chime will sound. This indicates that the module is in programming mode. Within thirty seconds, press and release the lock or unlock button on all transmitters intended for use with this vehicle except the transmitter used to start the programming mode. Successful programming will be indicated by a single chime.
NOTE: When programming mode is entered, programming is cleared from programmed transmitters and the transmitters will need to be reprogrammed.

That's very helpful info. But do the door locks have to lock while going down the road to have an alarm? Mine don't do that but the keyless works fine. Any clue about the auto lock or is my 98 too old?

you can activate/deactivate the auto lock at 15mph with a few key turns and hitting the lock button.
when i got my truck i was reading the user manual and saw that and it wasn't enabled, so i turned that feature on. that was before i got a key fob also.

You can get one on ebay for 20-30$
Do a search. I did a quick search and this is one of many that I saw.

I bought a used oem remote on eBay and am going to have it programmed at the dealer since my truck didn't come with any remotes . Not sure what the previous owner did with them since I bought it at a used car dealer.

Well let us know how that goes. Aparently the auto lock feature is on 99 and newer rams. So I dunno how many remotes I can have. I know I have 2 now. Would like to have a spare. but who knows.
