Default 46re 2wd convert to 4x4

Can this be done? I remember reading somewhere if you remove the tail shaft off the 4x4 and put it onto the 2wd tranny it will work? Anyone ever done this or know if it will work. I can source 2wd trannys for alot cheaper then 4x4 ones

I believe you need a different OD module to give the transfer case something to bolt to. I might be wrong here.

Your not wrong, but that can be swapped also. But the bottom line is , no you can't just remove the tail.

I suppose the real issue here is whether or not it's worth it to swap to 4X4. I say no. Just buy a 4WD truck.

Swapping from auto to manual is easier than this. With the 4WD you have to swap part of the tranny, the drive shaft, the entire front suspension, possibly the guage cluster (to gain the 4WD light), and install the 4WD suspension, front axles, trac-bar, steering system, vacuum lines, and God knows what else.

I might be wrong, but I think he's just talking about the tranny swap.

*smacks face*

You're right. I went back a re-read. He is just talking about swapping a 4X4 tranny into his 4X2 truck.

Helps if I read instead of skim.

actually im talking about swaping a 2wd tranny into my 4x4 ram :P But still the same idea. So I have to modify the OD assembly to make it all work?

I'm just going by what I've read here, hopefully someone with more knowledge about the subject( MonteC) or someone who has actually done it will chime in here.I don't think it's a big deal, just not as easy as removing the tail shaft.

I'm pretty sure you'll have to swap the OD assembly as well, or part of it. The "guts" of the tranny are the same so really you just need to swap part on the back of the tranny to give the transfer case somewhere to bolt to.

No modifying necessary other than swapping parts between the two trannies.

Again I could be wrong here. Hopefully MonteC will chime in.
