? about step in Hayes Manual and Pinion Seal Install
In the Hayes manual (p. 8-16), I had a few questions about some of the steps for the pinion seal install.
A). On step 11, it says to "lubricate the lips of the new seal with high-temperature grease". Where do I get that and can anyone recommend any particular brands and kinds?
B). On step 13, it says to "Apply non-hardening sealant to the ends of the splines visible to the center of the flange so oil will be sealed in". So basically....what the heck are they trying to say here? I understand that by flange, they are referring to the Yoke, but are they talking about RTV? If so, where are they suggesting I put it?
C). Last question. I think some recommended that I put RTV on the outer side/lips of the seal, where it touches the inside of the Differential Housing. Is this correct?
Thanks,
PF

Any time you install a seal any where on the vehicle, you want to put some good quality wheel bearing grease on the rubber part of the seal. And yes, they are talking about rtv or similar sealer after you put the comp flange on. And lastly , you don't need to put any rtv on the outer edge of the seal if you bought a good seal, like a National for instance, but it won't hurt to be extra sure.
