Dakota guy looking for Ram help...
With the diesels... I walked by one waiting out side the store today and didnt realize they were that loud. Is it common for them to be super loud even at idle!? I could heardly talk to the guy next to me till we got passed it! This could be a factor in my decision as I hunt. I cant imagin pulling up to a field just before dawn with something that loud with the intent of stalking an animal in the silent night!
Can they be "tamed down" at all?

That could be a big factor in my decision. I dont think any of it was exhaust noise I was hearing. I was walking around the front of the truck and it was all the typical diesel "knocking and klocking" as I would describe it.
That "knock knock" sound you were hearing is the injectors FYI.
Like I said before, all the common rail 5.9 diesels were loud compared to most other diesels of it's time. You forget though, the 5.9 is a different maiden compared to the duramax and the powerstroke. The D and PS are V8s and the cummins is a rather large inline 6 banger. Totally different sound and setup. They also smoke like crazy when you throw even the mildest of tunes on them. The 1997 5.9 C that we had was loud out side, but inside the cab, it wasn't that bad. That was an ST model, and had no frills and nothing to dampen road noise.

Hard to describe a sound with words! haha. I would describe the engine noise of a diesel as a "glock glock glock glock"
Donut... I like your sig... but I might add, on the flip side, that they are usually cheaper when purchased!!

Um.... WOW
As far as I can recall, every diesel ever put in a 2500 or 3500 ram was an I-6 Further more, IIRC: Cummins makes 3 main motors. I-4 I-6 and a V8. Not saying that's all of them though.
Oh, and spell the word correctly next time.

I;m curious to know what bad things you've heard about the V10. The only legitimate knock I know of is the poor gas mileage (I get between 8-11), but if you tow you will soon grow to love the V10. There were some head cracking issues with very early V10 heads, but it is a lot rarer than the internet makes it out to be. My truck has 104k on it, has been used primarily to haul very large boats and has been extremely reliable.
