Exclamation CEL problems...

I have been getting two CEL trouble codes for a while now. I used my Superchip to check them and this is what I got.

1.) Engine too cold for too long.

2.) Large Evap Leak Detected.

I installed a JET thermostat last Christmas, but I don't remember what degree it was. I believe that could be my problem with my engine being cold. Is that bad? Any ideas how to fix that?

And the Evap Leak... Any ideas what that is and where I could look?

I really want to get that CEL off just in case something major does happen and I won't know it. Any help is appreciated guys, thanks!

I'd say the thermostat has gone bad. Did it do this right after installing it?

Trace the hoses from the solenoid to the canister, and see if the canister has any cracks or holes. And IIRC, a Haynes can tell you how to check the electrical to the solenoid.

+1 on t-stat bad, or maybe temp sensor bad.
what's temp gauge read after a few minutes. does it come up about 180 or 190 or stay low around 150, or does it stay buried on dead cold.

i've also got a p0441 or 442 cant remember which. i'm too lazy to work on it.

I didn't even think of that. Well I'll purchase another one later, but what specific degree would be good? I live in northern Texas in case you need weather characteristics.

I know the stock 318 T-stat temp is 195*. I would bet the 360s are the same. I wouldn't reduce it to 180 or lower unless you have done some sort of moding.

^ 180 is considered the lowest you should go without getting a MIL light.
If he put in a fail safe ( I hope VW doesn't see this) then it may have gone bad, and failed in an open position.

My 318 is fairly stock. The only things I've done to it to is K&N drop in filter, and the Hughes plate. I put in a 180 since my truck is prone to overheating while idling. That 180 stat gives me a buffer. Now, it's been debated as to whether or not a colder stat causes more engine wear or not, but the differences are so small that it's nothing to worry about.
