Fresh Rebuild and lifters are clattering
I just did a complete stock overhaul of my 1998-360 and not real happy with the results. I replaced the lifters during the build and they sound completly dry during initial daily start up. They bleed down after 6+ hours and I am getting very disgusted. The lifters were a direct factory replacement purchased from Napa. (Part #HT-2269 Fed Mogul) I just switched to a 20-50 oil and that seemed to quiet a most of them but I'm guessing 3-4 are being very stubborn. I have great oil pressure at start up usually close to 60 lbs then running psi is a steady 40. I also switched oil filters to the larger Napa Gold unit. Once pumped up, they are quiet and the motor purrs like a kitten. During the rebuild, I positioned the lifters so the small oiling hole was facing the center of the motor. I did check a junk yard motor to verify I was placing them into the bores correctly. The motor has about 1000 miles on the rebuild.
Also not happy with the stock cam. I wasn't able to get a good feel for one that would not cause computer issues but give me what I need for the occasional towing but that's another issue.
Any suggestions?

by any chance did you let them soak in oil before you installed? they may have a air pocket in them that needs to bled out now by the motor, Oh and plus 1 on checking the rockers and see if they backed off and since you will have off the covers pull the push rods and see if you got some clogged ones. also marvel mystery oil will help with the lifter tap

Here's the update since that is one of my pet peeves about forums. I tried the Marvel Mystery oil and made 4-2 hour trips pulling my heavy camper. The lifters are not clattering at start up now! They seem to be holding prime and the truck is actually very quiet now. I parked it when I got home and let it set for 3 days and they were fine when I started it today. I'm not sure if it was the oil, the long trips or a combination of both but it did cure the problem. Next is the rear end rebuild.
