Yup, easy as pie - Just don't drop it on your head, they are mighty heavy.
Like dh said, first thing to do is disconnect the battery, don't be tempted to leave it hooked up just so you can listen to tunes while you work.
You are in a confined space under a vehicle with a heavy object hanging over your head, not the time for a nasty jolt or random, $hit inducing sparks.
And if there are any shims, replace them exactly as is on the new one.

Unhappy Need starter removal help

Hey guys., I have a 1996 Ram with 318. I'm getting the click- click too. Bought a starter and loosened the bolt and nut w/ washer.
I tapped with hammer, pryed with driver ...just wouldn't come loose. I think it is the original starter too. Finally got a heavy duty paint putty knife and tried to seperate it from the bell housing, but no luck!!!
Could it be welded or bonded with age to the motor?
Need some expert advise ...FAST
Thanks fellows. Steve

If I were you steve, I would take a jack and place it on the starter, jack it up 1 time and let it down. Do it again and again, itll break free

How many miles did the original starter have on it when it went out?

Take the bolts out, might have to wiggle it a bit, theres no way it can be seized or crusted so bad that it won't break free.

you may want to check the battery before you replace the starter. sometimes your battery can die just like that.

Make sure you took the started bolt out on my 96 there is another bolt for the tranny just above the starter. The first time I took mine out I removed that nut or bolt (I can't remember which) and had a little trouble until I felt up there and felt I still had a fastener on the starter.
