Default Overheated (I tried search function I promise)

And maybe I suck at the search function but I couldnt find an answer to my exact issue... it is a weird issue though.

Basically my 01 1500 5.9 Auto overheated one night on my way home. I noticed it and watched it. It never got super hot, maybe 3/4s of the way but never touched red.

So I thought maybe my waterpump or fan went out and the air (night time not quite as hot here) was keeping it cool enough to not cause any damage.

Well the next morning I awoke and decided to go fix the problem, assuming all I had was a cooling issue. However it seems the overheating did cause a problem... a slight knocking sound from the bottom... almost sounds like its coming from the oil pan but I know sounds resonate.

The thing is... there is no water or metal in my oil, no oil leaking around the gasket, heads seem to be perfectly fine... wouldnt a head gasket go or heads warp long before a rod loosened up?

I know this is a long shot, but someone in one of the searches I did said he overheated and had a timing chain stretch on him... is that a possibility or me reaching for the stars?

It seems to run ok, just a little rough on idle, however I traded my jetski for another 1500 so I wouldnt drive the 5.9 around and further damage it.

If it is the rod, Ill either rebuild the bottom end, or drop in a recycled motor... any suggestions? Greenleaf has good ones for about $1200.

Thanks for any help,
JT

How high do you think it reached coolant temperature wise?? I ask because once you reach a certain level (I forgot what temp exactly) and go above it, the oil is bad and the engine needs fresh lube. If the knock is at the speed of the engine - what your rpm gauge tells you - then it can be a con-rod knock.

Anything can happen. Check your spark plugs for coolant residue from burning if the headgasket went for starting out. Change your oil and cut the filter open and physically check the element for any debris. Do a coolant system pressure check also.

Welcome to the forum btw!

Thanks for the welcome.

Also thanks for the input. I will check the plugs this evening. Gona take the other ram to the shop and cut the cat and muffler off and reinstall the o2s (rear with nonfoulers of course) see if that helps with the problems with that one.

If I have time, I will change the oil real quick too and see how it goes. I have started it and let it idle for a few minutes, and there is no sign of coolant/water or metal shards in the oil from the dipstick.

And if it is the connector rod, im screwed huh? It does seem to be at the speed of the engine. I took it for a test ride right after changing the water pump out (hoping the bad bearing was the noise) and it runs nice and smooth above idle, but as soon as I put it in park in my driveway, rough idle and slight knock again.

How is your oil level? You could have spun a bearing or something along those lines. Also, what was your oil psi during this?

My oil pressure is great. It always has been and is just as strong right now. I let it run for about 15 minutes last night to allow it to warm up. A friend wanted to hear the knock sound... it didnt knock.

It is, however, idling very low (600 ish) and fairly rough so I think Im missing on a couple cylinders. I think what could have happened coulda been the gas went bad because of the excessive heat and maybe fouled a couple plugs. And that may explain the rough idling and such, but still no explanation for the knock in the bottom.

Another buddy of mine suggested maybe a cracked flywheel, that they sound the exact same... but I would think the cracked flywheel would knock while idling, not be wavering sometimes knocking, sometimes not.

I feel like Im just fooling myself... but the thing has no CEL, no water or metal in the oil (from the dipstick, draining oil this evening), knock is rarely there, great oil pressure, not smoking, runs wonderfully under a load (rarely do this to avoid further damage just in case), and wasnt low on oil when the overheating occurred.

I am going to drain the oil to look for coolant/water and metal shavings, change the plugs (or at least inspect and clean) and see what happens.
