Brake line shot, patch possible ?
Crossed my mind [about the gas line], actually not much more than surface rust at this point ,,, Though I suspect the not visible section behind the tank is probably a bit worse than that.
i was 17 when i replaced the brake lines on my t bird (with no help) and i had never done anything like that before. brake lines are pretty simple as long as you have a good fitting on each end.
when i got the car i had to cut down a couple pennies and use them to plug off the rear brake lines at the master cylinder just so i could drive it home. thats why when i have kids they aren't going to get a brand new honda like so many on the road today. i had to fix my first car before i could even drive it home and i ended up putting a lot of work into it over the years so that gave me a good deal of experience with auto repair and it made me appreciate it even more.
one thing you could do with your brake lines to prevent a future failure is to encase them in a rubber hose to keep the road salt off of them. either that or you can paint or undercoat spray them.

my sister bought a ford sport trac, or should i say my parents bought it for her...and don't have any problems with it, i think she should have bought a problem car, so she would have some auto experience, she don't even know how to change the oil...i have to do it for her
Most girlz will never learn how to do anything on a vehicle more complex than putting gas in it - Those more adventurous will also learn how to put air in the tires, and check oil level.
I consider a girl who can do all of that a female mechanic.
The simplest of tasks, like changing a tire or busting lose a stubborn nut, they are physically incapable of, and of course they don't want to risk getting any yucky grease on their fair skin, or risk busting a finger nail.
They are intimidated by machinery, and don't have the 1st clue how to troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues.
Of course, there are exceptions ,,, Or so I have heard.
Never met a mechanically inclined female myself.

my sister is getting there on her automotive knowledge. she's been working at advance for a while now and has done a few things by herself. she is the one that figured out that her battery wire that goes into the power distribution box was blistered and just plain bad under the wire insulation. she changed that and the ignition switch on her 99 ram and it fired right up after a couple weeks of not wanting to start.
Credit to your sis, a super female mechanic in my book.
I am forced at times to accept females onto my jobs, I hate to say it but all have been near 100% worthless, unqualified to do what they are supposed to be doing, and soaking up union pay only through family or sexual connections.
I detailed that in one post here and won't rant about it again, but I guess I am jaded against females trying to do a mans job, but more power to em if they try and succeed.

My mom is probably the best mechanic I know. She started out working on cars at Sears years ago. After that she went to my grandfathers Massey Ferguson dealership working on tractors and all kinds of farm machinery. Then she moved on to working on boats at a fairly large marina. When my father took over the Massey business, she went back there and has been since. She pretty much runs the business now. My dads in the field most the time and she runs the office, shop and parts counter. I remember in college (went to NADC) when I would call home to ask my mom about a problem I would be having on a diesel engine. All my classmates thought she was the coolest person ever because she always knew the root of the problems. That and she taught us alot of tips and tricks. I swear that woman could fix anything but a relationship.
