My driver side wheel bearing needs replaced in my dodge ram 4x4 and the hub will not come out. I followed the steps on the pavementsucks tech article and the hub would not break free. We tried heating up the knuckle and cooling the hub but it would not move. We put everything back together and taking to a shop so they can mess with it. Any tips on getting the hub off?

We're thinking a shop might have to take the knuckle off and press the hub out? Where should i take my truck to get this done? My dad and i do all the work on our vechiles and i'm not sure what the best shop for replacing this. I was thinking NTB or mienekee?

 

i had to carefully chisel mine off, it was a bitch, put a liberal amount of anti-seize on during reassembly

 

I had the same issue as well with mine. What I did was loosen the back hub bolts just a few turns and then beat on them (kinda using them as a punch to push the bearing out). It's hard to get back there and get a good swing with a BFH, but I managed and it worked for me. Also (kinda self explanatory), make sure you are beating on a socket instead of the head of the bolt so the it doesn't destroy the bolt head.

I wasn't worried about tearing up the bearing as mine was pretty well shot, but I did not see any damage to the threads or the bearing when I did it anyway.

Like stated above, use plenty of anti-seize on the back side of the bearing (or have the shop use some if they do it) so the next removal is SIMPLE.

 

We found a few extra bolts to put back there like you said that were a few inches longer than the ones holding the hub in. the hub didnt even move after countless hits with a BFH

read this one toward the bottom where i get to talking about penetrating fluid.

too many people try to remove the hub nut or the hub itself when they are dry and rust welded in place when all they have to do is spray a good penetrating fluid on the parts in question and they will come apart easily.

 

We sprayed probably half the bottle of PB blaster everywhere around the hub. I had to run to autozone and get another bottle because we ran out. My dad spent over an hour trying to get the hub out but wasnt able to get it. He gave a local repair shop a call and they quoted us at $45-75 for labor. That sounds pretty fair if you ask me.

 

the first time i did mine they were stuck as well. I went to a rental place and gotten a hub puller that went over the wheel studs and pushed off the axle end with the axle nut still on but loose. hooked up thunder ( my 3/4 impact gun) turned up air pressure 3 to 4 bangs of thunder and she came loose.

 

i said a good penetrating fluid. you would be better off just taking a leak on it instead.

 

Sorry. I didnt realize there was a second page to that thread. That was very interesting. My dad's friend owns a welding shop and i should be able to get some of that if they carry it or use it down there. Thanks for the info
