The sending unit is what the gauge hooks to to read the oil pressure in the engine. Its fairly cheep at you local auto parts house. Getting to it and replacing it? Well, that can be a PITA, It sits just below the distributor on then engine.

I have the same EXACT problem. My trucks registration has been due for a couple months now and Lucky for me it has to pass smog. So my poor Ram has been collecting dust since.

The first time this happened to me I was at a stop light going up hill, the check gauges light came on in traffic and right when I hit the gas nothing happened. My truck just died! I had to wait about 5 min. and then the truck started up again just long enough to get it home.

2 months later i'm in the same position. I've replaced the Oil Sending Unit (Mopar, not after market) and it seemed to be fine after that for a week or so. Then that red light of doom came back up. After taking it around the block one day for less then 10 min.

I just dropped it off at a shop 3 days ago and they told me they ran a diagnostics on it and it's not the oil pump. They said my battery was done for and they needed to replace it and the connector ends. What else is there to check??? Not having my truck is killing me!
