Default 5.9 engine swap

I have a 1996 1500 5.9 that is not holding oil pressure - it also blows the white ghost for 5 minutes at start-up so I am going to drop a used engine in her.

All of the replacement sites list 1994-2001 engines together, and then separate out 2002-2003. I found a 2002 engine with very low miles, and would like to get it - but I am not sure if it will drop in. Will it? Is there anything else to worry about going from 1996-2002? I can get the 2002 tranny too if that is a concern.

the core of the engine is the same, but the intake, sensors, and pcm is different for each. if you get anything other than a 96 and maybe a 97, you'll need to swap the intake and all sensors. (which is pretty easy).

02-03 is the beginning of the 3rd gen design where the old 5.9 inventory was used up. core is still the same.

you don't even want to think about using a 2002 transmission. you don't have the computer or wiring to operate it.

Thanks DH. As a matter of principle, would you do anything else to the 2002 block before dropping it in (for maintenance not performance purposes - i.e. oil pump, timing chain etc.). The engine has 58K on it.

^ when swapping your 96 intake, if you don't already have a hughes aluminum belly pan, install one. do a search on plenum and hughes for about a million posts. its a design flaw in the 5.2/5.9 intake.

hmmm, water pump, timing chain, front/rear seal, freeze plugs.... depends on time and budget. 58k is pretty low, odds are - things are in good shape. on the other hand, it sure is easy to replace these items while the engine is out. freeze plugs are a total bitch once the engine is installed. that problems comes up fairly often. it seems like dodge lets poor quality plating problem slip through and get into the engines, then after a while - leak time. i'd say oil pump is fine and a new one would be a waste of money.

somebody else (or 2 or 3) confirm. is this 02 5.9 going to drop in without problems provide he swaps intakes and sensors. what about the distributor and cam position sensor - ok as is or not ? anything else ?
